GENERAL PLAY
BACK PLAY REPORTING
- The Sideline Official's responsibility is to watch where the ball has been, not the ball
- Off the ball incidents can result in foul play, the SO is to identify and report when necessary
- These incidents could occur after a pass, tackle, scrum or kick
- Playing out advantage before reporting is the desired result in most instances however if the incident is serious enough and the opportunity arises a report can be made to the central referee immediately. If the offending team has the ball the report should be made immediately to the CR via com's and entry to the field made at a stoppage of play if the offence isn't major i.e. at the next PTB.
- The SO judgement of an incident doesn't change, just the timing of the report can vary
- The VR can and should be used whenever possible to check the incident. If serious enough for report or send-off, BUY TIME and consult the VR
FORWARD PASSES
- Assisting the CR with forward pass calls is a key role for the SO
- 'BEST POSITION WILL ALLOW THE BEST CALL'
- Get in line with pass as much as you can
- Urgency is the key. Especially now when we are coming off the 10m, urgency to get in best position and then back in time for the following ruck is essential
- Look for key indicators
- Key Indicators are...
- Hands of the passer
- Position of the players body as they pass
- Movement of player passing and trajectory of ball
OFFSIDE CHASERS
- Sideline Officials to be in best position to identify offside chasers
- Best position is in line with kicker, look for near and far side runners
- Short kick in guts zone
- Be aware of off-side chasers from field goal
- Kicker if he is shouldered and makes contact to the head, he is to be charged with a late tackle - make report
- Know the team's main kickers and anticipate when they are going kick, this way you can lift urgency and get to that best position
- Watch kicker we must sign off on kicker being cleared
- Be aware of position of players at the PTB if they take up chase
- Follow chasers, again looking for interference
- If ball is coming to your sideline, then far side SO needs to take a greater role in identifying offside chasers
